We’ve been away

A plane to Edinburgh, pick up a hire car, then three hours north. Up through Perth to the A93 and on through the ski area at Glenshee in fading light, watched by the silent stags at the roadside. A left turn in Braemar and five miles or so later we arrived at our destination; Mar Lodge, our home for a few days.

This is where Kath and Drew chose for their wedding and they couldn’t have picked a better spot; an old hunting lodge with an interesting past, now refurbished and cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. Sheltered in a flat valley bottom, and surrounded by hills, the mist hung low in the mornings, lifting to reveal trees turning slowly to the rusts and yellows of autumn.

F and I were lucky enough to be invited to stay from Monday to Friday, so a stately room in one of the Lodge’s flats became our base for explorations. We walked the roads around the lodge and the tracks around the Linn of Dee further up the valley, showered by needles from the larches. Then we took our little hire car up the valley beyond Braemar, through steeper hills and higher peaks before heading back to Edinburgh, pausing for photos of our boots in our first snow of the year.

It was a wild and beautiful place; a great setting for a wonderful occasion. And inside the lodge was an exercise in full on Scottish country estate, filled with a brilliant bunch of people and the most unusual, beautiful and crafty wedding I’ve ever seen…more on that later in the week.
